Oyster Shell-Enriched Soil on Maryland’s Eastern Shore

Damian heads to Temple Rhodes' farm on the Eastern Shore of Maryland to look at a very unique soil feature - OYSTERS! The proximity to Chesapeake Bay likely explains the presence of these shells, a remnant of an ancient oyster bed. These oyster shells have enriched the soil with calcium, eliminating the need for lime applications in certain fields. This natural calcium boost leads to higher yields, with as much as a 30-bushel per acre increase compared to nearby fields. Temple says that farms with oyster shell soils consistently perform better, highlighting the value of this unusual yet productive feature.

00:00:00 Here at Extreme Ag we talk a lot about soils, agronomic topics. We talk about variability of soils. 00:00:05 But you know what you probably don't have in your fields, you might have sand, silk, clay, varying degrees 00:00:09 of organic matter, but I'm guessing you don't have oyster shells in your fields. We're at Temple Roads, one of his farms here in, uh, 00:00:16 Eastern Shore of Maryland, and he says, I got something. You guys have probably never seen any of the fields. 00:00:20 And I said, what? He says, oysters shells in the soil. Um, presumably, presumably there's an explanation for this. I, I don't really know what I mean, I'm assuming 00:00:29 that years ago this was a oyster bed because it's, you lay crossed these areas, you know, behind us there. 00:00:35 That's one of the big tributaries. Yeah. We're less, there's a hundred yards from, uh, a tributary going into 00:00:40 Chesapeake Bay. So, I mean, and it's probably, I don't know, I'm gonna say a eight 10 foot drop off. 00:00:44 But, you know, that's something that you don't see. Kelly Garrett got a lot of things, but he doesn't have oyster shell 00:00:51 shells in his dirt, does he? But what I do believe is, I think that at one point, you know, everything was underwater at one point, 00:00:57 and that's how far these go back. And it's kind of hard to believe that they've, they're still out here. 00:01:01 You know what I mean? Like, they're still out here. And here's something that's interesting and Some of 'em are broken up in little pieces. 00:01:05 They've been driven over, hit hit with a piece of cultivation equipment. Yeah. They're, they're chipped up. 00:01:09 But, you know, here's an interesting fact. This field right here on the backside, you know, when we do soil samples, we've never had 00:01:17 to apply a line back here, ever. No. So there's enough calcium from however many years these oyster shells been here, 00:01:24 plus they've been shedding, getting a little bit broken, put in there. And it's calcified. It's, it's given you the amount of, uh, 00:01:30 uh, line that you need here. Yeah. And I mean, when you look at anywhere, and we, we have a lot of areas that are like this, 00:01:35 that are alongside the bay. We have a bunch of areas, and it's, and it's darker soil. It's not as pretty as Kelly's, but it's darker soil 00:01:42 and it's, and it's way meower. That's the calcium. And when you hit oyster shells, your yield always goes up. 00:01:48 So right where we are compared to, say, a quarter mile away where we're parked, uh, 20 bushel difference, 30, 30 bushel 00:01:56 Difference, it'll be a 30 bushel swing. And I mean, it doesn't mean if it's a good year, bad year, it doesn't matter. 00:02:00 There's enough organic matter in here. There's enough po say in this, so this, so is mellow enough that it'll just produce a better yield every time? Didn't 00:02:08 There, didn't, there wouldn't there a time when people like got these, ground 'em up and threw 'em on the field in this part of the world? 00:02:13 I that I can't tell you Don't. Would you do that? Would you recommend doing that? I mean, it works for me. It's worked. 00:02:18 It, I mean, look how I haven't put it on anything on here in years. Do you? Maybe it holds up better than the conventional line 00:02:23 Gonna say. Don't you wish that maybe in hindsight you've went around and found more farms to farm that had oysters in them? 00:02:29 I mean Yeah. The, these areas that have 'em do Really well. Got it. So yeah. Some of our highest productive soils, 00:02:36 Sometimes you can't explain it exactly, but you know what? It's pretty cool. I'm guessing that no matter what you farm, 00:02:42 and if you do, by the way, have a farm with oysters or clamshells are, or something like that, make sure you send us a note 00:02:47 because this is the first one I've been to. Yep. Got it. Till next time, temple Rose Dam Mason come at you with XT Extreme Mag. 00:02:53 We'll call this an oyster soil. We, you can call it whatever you want. I call it better than Kelly Garrett Soil. 00:02:58 How am I done? I like 00:02:59.565 --> 00:02:59.765
