Changing The Plant's Response to Its Environment
Temple Rhodes looks at the promising results of a new bio-insecticide product, TS 201, tested against his grower standard practice. This EPA-registered product is highlighted for its effectiveness in corn rootworm mitigation by stimulating the plant's immune system, leading to improved root architecture.

00:00 Hey guys, it's Temple. I have Allison here with New Leaf. So the product that we're, we've been testing out, 00:05 that we put in trials with 'em. Um, this product, I can't really tell you a lot about it because it's gonna be technical 00:11 and they went up against my grower standard of practice and they're kicking my butt and I don't like it. But I basically, 00:18 this is a really easy hopper box treatment for me. Yeah. Um, that's what I like about it. Extremely efficient. We got out in the field, we did this root dig, 00:27 we saw multiple things here. Um, one obviously the, the root structure's completely different. Yeah. Which I'm not digging down on. 00:37 You know, for me, the other thing that we saw is, you know, we, we see that obviously I've got some type of deficiency 00:43 that was early on in the plant, which I don't have here. We saw some pineapple out in the field. 00:49 Um, again, I'm not sure why we're seeing these giant roots versus this one. And I didn't let you cherry pick. 00:57 I picked three plants in a row and these were all side by side. And we pulled 'em all up together. 01:01 We washed the roots so we could get everything. And this is what we see. So tell me something. What am why am I seeing this? 01:08 Well, our EPA registered bio insecticide TS 2 0 1 has multiple modes of action with the plant. It protects from corn, rootworm mitigation, uh, by 01:21 basically stimulating the plant's own immune system. And part of some of those defense genes are linked to also overall root architecture. 01:32 So what you're seeing here, which one's steeper? If you look at the angle of connection of the roots to the crown, you see steeper and deeper here. 01:42 And this is obviously the same seed, right? But you're able to use a microbial technology to change the way the plant is responding to its environment. 01:51 You know, we, we, we did this, you know, because of, you know, rootworm pressure, that's what, you know, we don't have a tremendous 01:58 amount of rootworm pressure. And then you guys were like, you know, we might be seeing something more than just rootworm. 02:03 Yep. We still wanna do it even though you don't have the pressures that they do out in the Midwest and all. 02:08 But I, I don't really, I don't even care. Like this is dramatic. I don't like it on my end. But you know what I'm seeing here. 02:20 For us, we talk about stress mitigation. Stress mitigation, stress mitigation. Yeah. How do we get around it? This is how you get around it. 02:26 We saw it today. I'm in an irrigated field. It was just irrigated two days ago. This corn was starting to roll up. Yeah. Somewhat. 02:33 Give a little bit of that ping and there is a little bit difference in color. Yeah, absolutely. It was some yellow wind. 02:39 'cause when we went out there, we found the line. This is not showing nothing. It's just vibrant and it seems like it's going, you know, 02:46 it's kind of kicking in for me. Stress mitigation starts right here and we've been good about trying 02:52 to get really great structure in our roots. Obviously I haven't been doing a good job, but this is the beauty of technology. 03:00 Well what I will say is we usually see tons more fine roots. You're doing a fantastic job managing 03:06 for fine root development because these have a ton of fine roots. It's just, it's the angle and it's the shallowness. Right. 03:15 What we typically see when we do digs is massive amounts of bushy fine roots here 03:20 and not as much in grower standard practice. Um, you've nailed the fine roots. It's just about getting deeper penetration into the soil 03:29 profile to access water and nutrients. Yeah. So I mean, it looks like to me, you know, we've, we've got a good competition on our hands here. 03:38 We've got a tremendous side by side. I cannot wait till we take this to the end in August at our field day we'll obviously do 03:46 some more root digs and then we'll wash 'em out and we'll see the comparison. Then by then we'll have a ear on the stalk. 03:51 You know, maybe we'll be able to see a little bit more. Even if you have light to no corn rootworm pressure, I think it's worth doing that Dig in August. 03:58 Yeah. 'cause you may see that that change in the overall structure of steepness. What we've also seen sometimes is node six 04:06 and node seven filled with brace roots. Where in the grower standard practice, there are no brace there. 04:13 Right. So even things like general standability, even without the corn rootworm pressure, um, should be positively impacted. 04:20 So I'm very curious to see what these look like. And I hope you get a little bit of corn rootworm pressure. Not too much that you're sad, but a little bit. Listen, I, 04:27 I don't want any, I mean this is proof in the pudding for me. Like I don't, I'm not saying that we even need rootworm. 04:33 I mean there is some of that around here. It's not a lot of pressure, but there is always pressure. You know, for me this is stress mitigation. 04:41 Even if we're on an irrigated situation. Yeah. Me not running the irrigation here and running irrigation here. 04:47 This is costing me money. And that's not, I'm adding nutrients here because I feel like I'm deficient here. 04:53 I'm not. You know, and we're gonna, this week that's where we're gonna wrap up. We're gonna go out and we're gonna do some tissue samples 04:58 and we're gonna figure out where we are here and where we are here and what I lacked in here and what I'm not, what I'm already getting there. 05:05 And naturally this is a great thing for me. So, you know, guys, I cannot wait to share more as we, um, continue this season. 05:14 It's gonna continue on. I'm gonna pull this apart and I'm gonna see what we got and I'm gonna try to make my 05:19 growers stand to practice better. Alright. It's on. Thanks so much. Yep, no problem.
